Further Practice: Speaking and Listening

IDP’s Further Practice: Speaking and Listening is aimed at people intending to take the IELTS test for the first time, or for those who have already taken the test but failed to achieve the desired band score in these skill areas.

It is designed for people who have already undertaken a certain amount of IELTS preparation and/or who have reached an upper-intermediate level of English.

  • Speaking

On this course the students can expect to be fully familiarized with the speaking module of the IELTS test and to be introduced to a number of test “gambits”.

The course also seeks to increase the students’ grammatical proficiency by practice in a number of key areas, including tenses (especially present, past and conditionals), comparatives and future forms for speculating.

There is also a large input of academic vocabulary intended to increase the students’ lexical resource, which the students practise by discussing and presenting facts and opinions about a variety of topics.
  • Listening

Students can expect a full overview of the listening module of the IELTS test and an introduction to a number of strategies for dealing with the various question types, with a strong emphasis on coping with short answer questions.

The skills students develop and practise include: listening for specific information by learning to recognize key questions words; learning to anticipate answers and to focus on more than one question; learning more about native speaker pronunciation; practising making notes while listening; and practice at guessing unknown vocabulary.

As with the speaking, introduction of topic-related vocabulary is an important aspect of the listening element of the course.
